Grosseto

The city of Grosseto is located a few kilometers from the sea in Southern Tuscany, in the geographical area known as the Maremma.
The city's main square is Piazza Dante, site to a monument dedicated to the Grand Duke Leopold II of the Lorraines. The grand Cathedral dedicated to San Lorenzo (Saint Lawrence) and the Palazzo dei Priori (Palace of the Priors) face onto the square.
The imposing Medici-era defensive walls that surround the old historical center deserve to be visited. The walls were modified and transformed into public gardens by order of Leopold II, but still present their original hexagonal shape.

Each location has a detailed history, and often is accompanied by scans of period letters or drawings, with present day photographs. A large linked map of Grosseto is also present, making it easier to view a specific site by their location.
