Livorno
Livorno, important city along the Etruscan Coast, is still today one of the main ports of the Mediterranean Sea. The Medici family, at the end of the 16th century, understood the great strategic importance of Livorno as a mercantile and military site: the family ordered its architects and planners to design and build the "ideal" city, upon which it began to play an increasingly relevant commercial role in the sea trade.
The city's Medici-era harbour is dominated by the more ancient fortification known as the Fortezza Vecchia (Old Fortress), while the original Fossi Medicei, the canal system that characterizes Livorno, crosses the historical center of the city.
The Italian Naval Academy is located in Livorno, where the Italian Marine Military trains its officials. The Amerigo Vespucci ship is used by the academy for training.
